Programme for Graduate Students - Fashion Technology

In this course, students develop an understanding of the importance of using appropriate 'design methods' to achieve their creative intentions. The application of a 'design methodology' will ensure that all significant factors are considered within a structure of development, and that briefs are undertaken thoroughly. Students develop the skills necessary for working through the design development cycle to produce successful design outcomes.

The course introduces the principles of pattern construction. Students work through a series of exercises leading to the completion of a full pattern that has been translated from a design drawing. This helps students develop a range of skills necessary for producing a garment. They demonstrate the use of appropriate machinery and understand processes and assembly methods for producing sample garments.
Students also explore methods used to communicate fashion ideas and develop knowledge and skills in visualisation techniques for fashion design.

The course offers an insight into how fashion trends evolve, how they influence a wide range of fashion product areas, and the practical application of trend intelligence in product design and development.

Students are encouraged to develop visual thinking and creativity as fundamental to all design work. They use material and media which are specific to design, as well as unusual materials and media which will extend their visual language and creativity.
Students further develop their creative and visual awareness through critical investigation, research, personal enquiry and discovery. They are encouraged to show initiative and perception through personal expression and enquiry to develop creative potential and personal style.

Students relate practical studies in fashion and textiles to a professional context. They study legislation affecting artists, craftspeople and designers, and develop understanding of professional ethics and responsibilities. They also understand the role of export promotion organization, and familiarize themselves with export documentation requirements and exchange control regulations to keep abreast of current global trade practices and happenings.
